Rebuilt Runway of Cincinnati Airport

Lately there has been the commission of a lot of new infrastructure development projects and other construction activity on the Cincinnati/ Northern Kentucky International Airport. Due to this, the airport has had a significant economic influence on the neighborhood, amounting to around 6.8 billion dollars annually. The airport saw over 9,000,000 passengers in 2019 alone. Now CVG is among the top 10 busiest cargo airports in North America.

The airport staff and planners took care of the restoration of runway 9/27 last year and will carry on working on the nearby taxiways this year. This runway is crucial for freight operations and is used often in the night time. The outstanding planning, execution and timely financing from the FAA made it possible for the rehabilitation of the runway to be completed in just a year instead of two. Apart from 9/27 CVG has three other runways as well. The restoration process also involved the installation of new concrete, asphalt and lights on the runway.

After serving for around 30 years and sustaining the impact of numerous take offs and landings, the runway had to be rehabilitated. The runway sees a lot of traffic as it is used for both passengers and cargo, the freight traffic only grew during the pandemic. Since CVG is used for the transportation of ecommerce related goods, the planners determined that it needed to be operational quickly.

This ultimately meant workers had to spend long days working on the restoration. They crushed leftover materials from the old runway to use it in the reconstruction process. This saved them the time that would have otherwise been spent on bringing in new material for the job. Additionally, it meant less carbon emissions as fewer truck trips were required. The fact that a huge milling machine capable of grinding a twenty-foot-wide strip of pavement was available for use also helped in saving some time.

The improvements in the new surface are quite visible. The runway is back to daily service only with no cracks or bumps on its surface. Due to all the recycling, there were a lot of savings because they did not need to spend as much on finding the required materials and construction equipment for sale making it possible for the project to be completed under 70 million dollars. The construction team worked hard to complete the project as quickly as possible while maintaining the quality standards.
