Komatsu’s Hydrogen Fuel Cell Excavator for Carbon-Neutral Construction

Komatsu, a leading construction equipment manufacturer, is making significant strides in the development of an excavator fueled by hydrogen fuel cells. Collaboration with Toyota for Hydrogen Fuel Cell Adoption

Komatsu collaborated with Toyota Motor Corporation to integrate hydrogen fuel cell technology and a hydrogen tank into their medium hydraulic excavator. It is by combining Toyota’s fuel cell system with Komatsu’s control technologies and components that the excavator is designed to achieve zero exhaust emissions and significant noise and vibration reduction while delivering comparable performance to engine-driven machines in terms of digging and maneuverability.

Advantages of Hydrogen Fuel Cell Technology

While battery-powered electrification has predominantly focused on small, portable equipment, medium- and large-sized construction machinery requires a power source with higher energy capacity. Hydrogen fuel cells offer a promising alternative due to their higher energy density and faster refueling capabilities compared to electricity. As a result, companies such as JCB, Hyundai, Volvo, and now Komatsu are actively exploring hydrogen or hydrogen fuel cell technology for larger machinery, aligning with Komatsu’s goal of achieving carbon neutrality in construction machinery.

The company has set a target of becoming carbon neutral by 2050 and aims for a fifty percent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions from both the usage of its manufactured goods and equipment production by 2030, relative to 2010 levels. Expanding Electrified Machine Portfolio

At the Con Expo-Con/Agg 2023, Komatsu showcased a range of electrified machines that are expected to soon enter the market. This includes a greater number of hybrid diesel-electric hydraulic excavators and electric mini excavators. By offering these carbon-neutral alternatives, Komatsu aims to assist its customers in adopting sustainable practices and reducing their environmental impact.
