Diesel engine manufacturer, Cummins, has recently launched a new brand, Accelera, dedicated to zero-emissions power for all applications, from powering homes to trucking. Cummins CEO, Jennifer Rumsey, announced the new brand during an in-person and live-streamed event in Washington, D.C. She stated that Accelera would utilize Cummins’ global scale and footprint, strong relationships with customers and partners, and deep understanding of customer applications to establish the brand. Rumsey said that Accelera had the broadest range of zero-emissions technologies to support commercial and industrial vehicle applications, adding that Cummins was recognized as both an engine and zero-emissions solutions provider.
Cummins’ New Power Business has grown, and is projected to generate between $350 million and $400 million this year, with expectations to reach between $6 billion to $13 billion by 2030. The company is a leader in electrified products for the US commercial vehicle market, and has hundreds of electrolyzers around the world, including a 20-megawatt Polymer Electrolyte Membrane (PEM) electrolyzer in Canada, and 2,000 other electrolyzer sites worldwide.
Accelera’s portfolio includes battery packs, battery management systems, inverters, motors, traction systems, and control systems to tie it all together, putting them in a unique position to provide components, subsystems, or integrated vehicle systems for customers. Accelera’s goal is to power all applications, from industrial mining machines to freight trains, with zero-emissions power, with particular attention to PEM electrolizers for extending battery electric range with hydrogen fuel cells.
Amy Davis, Cummins’ former vice president and president of new power, will lead the Accelera business, which includes 2,000 employees, many from Cummins and its acquisitions. Davis stated that Accelera’s name came from the words accelerate, era, and et cetera, signifying propulsion, a new era, and an interactive approach to pursuing the most promising path forward for their customers. She believes that Accelera has the support and backing of a company like Cummins, the manufacturing scaling capacity, and a global footprint to support zero-emissions applications when in service.
