John Deere Debuts 3 New Large-Sized Excavators in the Performance Tier

The large-sized 470 P-tier, 670 P-tier, and 870 P-tier excavators from John Deere are the latest additions to the company’s Performance-Tiering, or P-tier, portfolio of excavators. The new models are an addition to Deere’s previously launched mid-sized excavators, the 350 P-tier and the 380 P-tier, back in March. These new and advanced excavators are equipped with numerous new features to enhance the efficiency of operations and increase the comfort level of operators. Some of the major benefits of these new excavators are discussed below.

Enhanced Operator Vision

The basic right, rear, and left camera systems with additional LED-surround lighting are all integrated into the machine’s main monitor on all 3 models. The inclusion of LED-surround lighting and standard camera systems provides the operator with a 270-degree view of the area around the machine. This enhances safety and visibility while working.

Increased Operational Efficiency

The SmartGrade technology is available as a built-in factory option on the 470 P-tier models for those wishing to improve their operations. Customers can choose from any of the following grade options: SmartGrade 3D control, SmartGrade 2D control, and 2D guidance. With the use of these grade management tools, customers may select the degree of technology that best suits their needs while having the flexibility to upgrade if their requirements change. The over-dig protect technology is included in the SmartGrade, and it prevents the cutting edge of the bucket from deviating below the surface of the target design which significantly increases operators’ accuracy.

Lower Fuel Consumption

Unlike the traditionally used wheel excavators, the new P-tier excavators can perform at high levels while contributing to decreased on-the-job fuel consumption, building on the success of the P-series excavators. When hydraulics are not in use, auto-idle technology automatically lowers engine speed, aiding in fuel conservation. The hydraulic reversing fan helps in keeping the coolers clean in situations with high levels of debris, and the auto-shutdown feature further conserves gasoline while on the job.

Variety of Options

The new hydraulic coupler-ready option in the 470 P-tier offers factory-installed hydraulic tubing that extends all the way to the end of the arm. Additionally, coupler controls are built-in and integrated into a switch in the cab. This functionality, which is compatible with several aftermarket coupler manufacturers, enables operators to quickly switch attachments and extends the number of productive workday hours.

The large excavator’s hydraulic system balances engine performance and hydraulic flow for controlled operations. Operators can also choose between three productivity modes based on the task at hand. The P-tier excavator models also offer a range of trim packages, enabling the machine’s functionality to be tailored to job site requirements.

Reduced Cost of Operations

The economy mode helps to lower engine RPMs, which in turn helps to reduce the amount of fuel used by the machine. Economy mode, therefore, significantly helps in reducing the cost of operations. High productivity mode offers additional power and quicker hydraulic reactions, making it possible to move large quantities of material in a shorter time span. The power mode provides smooth and balanced metering for routine operation on the job.

Improved Quality

The solutions and marketing manager at John Deere Construction and Forestry, Justin Steger, reported that the new additions in the P-tier large excavators are built to deliver exceptional performance in the harshest environments.  The quality is much improved from previous generations of excavators.  They are built to last and to be a productive part of any fleet of equipment.
