Tips to Protect Your Construction Site from Theft

Construction sites often become the target of local criminals. All types of criminal activities take place on an unmonitored construction worksite.  Construction projects that are subjected to criminal activities like theft and vandalism must deal with a lot of issues like project delays and increased expenses.

If you do not make a plan to protect yourself from such criminal activity, you will be facing a loss, whether it is in the form of stolen construction material or tampered with heavy equipment. Construction projects have more than enough going on without having to deal with the added stress of handling construction site theft. The following are a few steps that you can take to protect yourself from construction site theft.

A Theft Prevention Policy

Make sure to implement and enforce a theft prevention policy to protect your construction projects from any threats. Even your own employees, subcontractors, or other workers may prove to be a threat to the project. Although we hope that everyone working on the project is honest, that is not always the case. Ensure that your theft prevention policy is well heard and understood so it can be most effective. If there is a policy in place that outlines the consequences of any such actions, your workers will be less likely to make rash decisions.

Construction Security Systems

Vacant construction worksites often attract trespassers and intruders. Having a security system on construction worksites is important, especially when the property is inactive. Construction site security systems can include security cameras, alarms, and security guards to deter trespassers and intruders. However, the economic downturn has made these security systems more ineffective as of late.

People are now using live video monitoring and motion detection on properties to see if there is any unwelcome activity on site. These systems treat any unwanted activity in the same way with a series of audible alarms and voice broadcasts that attempt to engage potential suspects before they can harm your site. Local law enforcement officers are also alerted to any suspicious activity on the worksite immediately. You can use live video monitoring services to prevent any loss that could lead to project delays and overall frustration and problems.

Storage of Equipment and Material

The first thing that you need to think about is what construction materials thieves will look for on a worksite. Although all the construction equipment and material present on a work site may be at risk, there are some things that thieves are more likely to take. Things like lumber, copper wires, metals, tools, and other large equipment present at a construction site are more at risk of being stolen. You should be sure to secure these items in storage containers away from plain sight, so they are not easy to reach. Do not leave your equipment and material vulnerable and out in the open for thieves to find.

Proper Fencing and Lighting

With proper perimeter fencing, you can keep out any unwanted intruders from your construction worksite. This way, you will also have an extra barrier for any unattended equipment that you have on-site. Having good lighting on your construction site is also important as it will keep your job site properly illuminated. If your worksite is well lit, it will deter any potential criminals and thieves since they prefer to steal in the cover of darkness.
